Welcome to WDM Bristol group

Everyone is welcome to WDM Bristol group meetings which we hold every other month (venue and date subject to change at the moment so please email or telephone Phillada if in any doubt).  We often have a guest speaker or presentation as well as planning and reporting on actions and coming events. In addition we hold public meetings, usually in other venues, and occasional demonstrations and publicity stunts.

Our current secretary and official contact person is Phillada Ware.  You can contact her by telephone on 0117 924 1304 or by email on phillada@blueyonder.co.uk

Coming events

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 27th January 2010 at 7.30 pm, at our new venue, Horfield Quaker Meeting, 300 Gloucester Road, BS7 8PD.

The speaker will be John Madeley, a long standing WDM member who lives in Reading. His subject will be: Communicating Development Issues in Today's Climate How do we communicate development issues in a way that attracts more people to campaign to end the injustice of poverty? John has, in fact, written a novel which raises some of these issues. The following meeting will be the AGM at 7.30 on Tuesday 30th March, also at the Horfield Meeting House. It would be great to have new members of the group and of the committee. Subscriptions for 2010 are now due ( £5 waged/£3 unwaged) and are payable to Graham Davey at 29 Norton Road Knowle, BS4 2EZ or at the meeting. We will be delighted to see you at one or both of the meetings. .

Meetings and Events in 2007

In May we heard from Richard Beya and friends about the appalling situation in the Congo and the hospital he is supporting. Our group meeting in September tackled climate change and led to our watching a film on the same subject in December.

We have been investigating marketing strategies, which have included working with other organisations. We held joint meetings with the Bristol Zimbabwe Association in June and in October, the second of which included the film, ‘Mugabe’s Reign of Terror’, and a discussion with its producer and presenter. Our monthly newsletter has advertised events organised by other groups as well as our own.

We held a public meeting on climate change in February with WDM speaker Leila Dean and took part in a workshop in April on the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade where we were reminded of the various ways in which the evils of that trade continue in the trafficking of women and the exploitation of children and vulnerable adults.

Stalls have been held at the University Latin America Forum, the Amnesty Garden Party, an Oxfam conference on climate change and an event at Redland United Reformed Church. In November we helped the national office host a campaigners’ gathering at St Werburgh’s Community Centre.

Individual members of the group have lobbied their MPs on the current issues and have spoken on behalf of WDM at meetings of other organisations.

Welcome to the new Bristol group page. We will add content this month!
