Welcome to WDM Sheffield Group
WDM in Sheffield
WDM in Sheffield is a Group Member of the World Development Movement. WDM nationally tackles the underlying causes of world poverty, lobbies decision makers to change the policies that keep people poor, researches and promotes positive alternatives. WDM works alongside people in the developing world, who are standing up to injustice.
What does WDM in Sheffield do? The Group campaigns locally, lobbys MPs and MEPs, has a regular pub group, organises public meetings, mounts displays, publishes a newsletter and runs stalls at festivals and in the street.
If you would like to be involved at any level, please contact us at WDMSheffield@googlemail.com
Pub Meetings: 2nd Monday of every month. Next 8th Feb, 8-10pm at the Red Deer, 18 Pitt St, Sheffield. The monthly pub meetings provide a chance to debate and understand issues and generate creative ideas about how to change things. We don’t want them just to be about discussion, we want some action to come out of them and hopefully kickoff more projects like the climate ark. At the moment we're focusing on trade issues. We’re very welcoming. For lots more information see: http://wdmsheffield.pbwiki.com or phone Ruth on 07800 666553 or email us on the same email WDMSheffield@googlemail.com
Upcoming events: Fairtrade Fortnight: 22th Feb-7th March 2010
• Fairtrade business challenge: Help us persuade local businesses to swap to fairtrade products for fairtrade fortnight. We will speak to as many local businesses as we possibly can, especially focusing on cafes to encourage them to try fairtrade products. A group of us will be approaching businesses on Fri 5th and Sat 5th March and would really appreciate extra help either on these days or other times if you prefer.
• Fairtrade tea party, 27th Feb: Enjoy fairtrade tea, coffee and cake, along with music and an Alice in Wonderland theme. We will also have campaign cards to encourage more shops to stock fairtrade goods and to get the government to tighten up laws to make trade fairer. If you like baking, dressing up, talking or making tea then contact us.
• Fairtrade stall, Fargate, 6th March: We'll have campaign cards to sign and will be targeting one of the worst offending clothing shops for worker exploitation with protest knickers.
External Meetings, talks, conferences: There are generally two or three of these a year, usually with knowledgable and interesting outside speakers. They are a great way to keep up to date with issues. Even if you can't commit to more than this, we can let you know when these are going to happen.
Planning Meetings happen once a month, they are where we plan talks and campaigns, work out the technicalities, etc. Again you are welcome to come along.
